Do this next time you are at a garden center: Take a look at the back of a fertilizer box. You will see that there are percentages of nutrients. The 20-10-20 means there is 20% nitrogen, 10% phosphorus, and 20% potassium. Different combinations give different results. Just like if you were to eat different percentages of carbs, proteins, fats, and fruits and veggies - you would get different results.

So, in order to succeed you must eat a well balanced diet.

The general guideline that I recommend is 25% protein, 45% Carbs, 10% fruits and veggies, and 20% fat.

This is an optimal ratio to bulk up size and strength. However, depending on one's goal - and metabolic rate the ratio may need to be adjusted somewhat. For example, if one was to go on a cutting diet he may increase his protein ratio while decreasing carbohydrate ratio.
